Weekly Update: May 11 to May 15

Happy Mother’s Day, Grizzly Families!

The warm weather helped to make our last scheduled fire drill a success!  As we had a few emergency evacuations this year, we have now met our quota of fire drills.

For schools, warm weather also means that hallways are quieter during lunch as students move outdoors to enjoy themselves.  Most Grizzlies are responsible (part of our COURAGE model) and come back for afternoon classes on time, but there are some that don’t.  Our late policy provides some space for life’s happenings for each student (two “freebie” lates per month are allowed before consequences are imposed).  As we approach the end of the year, we will be considering different consequences, particularly after lunch.  Please have conversations with your child about the importance of being on time for school.  We appreciate how you help both your child and the school when you do this—we are a team!  Read the “Connecting Home and School” Section below for some ideas to encourage attendance responsibilities.

We had many students and staff wear red for Red Dress Day and hats for Hats on for Mental Health Day.  It’s wonderful to see us connect as a community to observe these days and talk about why they exist.

Ask your child about Friday's Grizzly Den.  The Den Defense Game is ongoing and students are enjoying the game, if their visits to the "scoreboard" reflect their interest.  Last Friday students also played with some baby photos of staff.  They had to identify the staff member based on the baby photo.

CONNECTING HOME AND SCHOOL:  Building Strong Attendance Habits in Junior High

Regular attendance and arriving on time are two of the strongest predictors of student success in junior high. Every class matters — not only for academic learning, but also for building friendships, routines, confidence, and responsibility.

As students grow more independent, families still play an important role in helping them develop healthy school habits. Here are a few ways parents can support strong attendance and reduce tardiness:

Tips for Families

  • Establish consistent routines for bedtime, waking up, and morning preparation.
  • Pack bags, lunches, and clothing the night before to reduce morning stress.
  • Encourage students to set their own alarms and take increasing responsibility for being ready on time.
  • Aim to arrive at school 5–10 minutes early whenever possible.
  • Schedule appointments outside school hours when you can.
  • Talk with your child about the importance of attending every class, even on days when motivation is low.

Why Attendance Matters

Missing even a few classes each month can make it harder for students to:

  • Keep up with assignments and group work
  • Build strong relationships with peers and teachers
  • Develop confidence and classroom routines
  • Feel connected to school activities and learning

Being late can also disrupt learning for both the student and the class. Developing punctual habits now helps prepare students for high school, employment, extracurricular activities, and future responsibilities.

We’re Here to Help

If your family is experiencing challenges that affect attendance or punctuality, please reach out to the school. We value working together to support student success and well-being.  Thank you for partnering with us to help students start each day ready to learn!
