General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
Attendance Line: 403-777-7680 ext. 1
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line listed above. See more on our Attendance page.
Students who are ill should ask the teacher’s permission to report to the office. In the office, parents/guardians will be contacted regarding permission to go home. Please ensure that the school is provided with current phone numbers for just such a case. Please note that school personnel are not permitted to provide students with any type of medication.
Staying Healthy
There are over 500 students and adults in our school building every day. The chance for students to pass illness around increases when we don’t all take precautions. Washing hands is the single most important way to prevent influenza. Wash hands for at least 15 seconds with soap and warm water or use a hand sanitizer in the following situations:
Before:
- Handling or eating food or feeding others
- Brushing or flossing teeth
- Inserting or removing contact lenses
- Treating wounds or cuts or
- Touching your eyes, nose or mouth in any way
After:
- Having any contact with a person who has influenza or with their immediate environment
- Using the toilet or changing a diaper
- Blowing your nose or wiping a child’s nose
- Coughing or sneezing
- Treating wounds or cuts;or
- Touching your eyes, nose or mouth
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy:
- Covering your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, preferably with a tissue
- Throwing away tissues after wiping your nose, sneezing or coughing
- Coughing into your elbow, not your hand, if no tissue is available
- Keeping personal items separate if a household member has influenza
- Not sharing personal items or drinks and
- Maintaining good health, including drinking plenty of water, not smoking, exercising regularly and eating nutritious meals.
If you have recently been travelling and are experiencing flu like symptoms, or have been in contact with someone who has been, contact the Health Link by dialing 811.
Allergies
Nut allergies are present in our school as are other food allergies. Teachers are well informed about the needs of students in their classrooms. Please check with them before sending anything for the class to the school.
Please know, we are an, ”allergy aware” school. Keeping students and staff from a variety of allergens is a shared responsibility of students, staff and parents.
Students, taking into account their individual abilities are responsible for developing skills at managing their personal allergy awareness. This is often accomplished by simply not sharing foods with others and asking, “Does this contain _____________?”
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
