Happy Sunday, Grizzly families!

Thanks to our families who participated in last week’s Parent/Teacher Conferences.  The connection between home and school is important and we work as a team to support your child.  Throughout the year, you may have questions for us and you are not required to save them up for these conferences.  Most questions should go to the classroom teacher; however, if you need support and you are not sure who to ask, call the office and we can direct you to the appropriate staff member.

We recently learned that Ms. Dool will be leaving us for another teaching adventure overseas and that her last day will be Friday, December 6.  We thank her for support of our Grizzlies and wish her well in her next chapter.  Ms. Dalton will be taking Ms. Dool’s classes and will be meeting her classes later this week.  Welcome to Ms. Dalton!

Last week we had our first lockdown drill of the year.  Our drill was a success because of the efforts of staff and students.  We will have a second drill later in the school year.

CONNECTING HOME AND SCHOOL:  A few weeks ago, I commented that most of our students struggle to make good choices when using their phone or personal device.  This week, I am asking parents to do some homework related to the topic of the safety of their child when it comes to personal devices and the Internet.  Consider these four questions:

  1. Do you know what your child is using their personal device for and when they are using it?
  2. If your child is using a personal device, do you know what apps or sites your child is using?
  3. If you child is using apps or social media sites, do you know the age requirements for each site or app?
  4. Do you know how much time each day your child is using their device, social media, or the Internet?

If the answer is no to any of the above questions, please take steps to find out and use that information to consider your own next steps in supporting your child and their use of personal devices or the Internet.

Did you know?

  • NEW:  As you know, we ask parents and guardians to refrain from using our parking lot for dropping off or picking up students.  This is, first and foremost, for student safety and it also allows our staff members to access their assigned spots throughout the entire workday, regardless of the time of day.  Please don’t assume that if a parking spot is empty, it is not needed.  In winter, we add another reason to stay out of the parking lot— it is not always plowed, and throughout the winter, despite being asked not to use our parking lot, parents get stuck.  Please stay out of the Annie Gale parking lot.
  • NEW: The Success Centre is up and running on Wednesdays and Thursdays thanks to Ms. Nakamura, who will be working with small groups on literacy and numeracy support.
  • NEW:  Annie Gale has surpassed its goal on the amount of waste our school produces.  This is, in part, because of the efforts of families and students who choose to send food in reusable containers, and from our efforts to recycle and use the compost bins.  Congratulations, Grizzlies!
  • REPEAT:  Snowballs are not permitted on CBE school property, for safety concerns.  Please ensure that you discuss this with your child—if they wish to engage in a snow fight, they must do it away from school property.
  • REPEAT:  Our current bout of snow and cold weather means that we need to remind parents and guardians that students need to be dressed for the weather.  Boots, gloves, toques, and warm coats are a necessity.  Our front doors open at 7:45 and will not be open earlier unless the weather is colder than –20 degrees Celsius.  At lunch we will open some more spaces for students to gather during blue days (colder than –20 degrees Celsius).
  • REPEAT:  Our next council meeting date will be in January; there will be no December meeting.
